Questions to Ask Before Hiring a Landscape Lighting Contractor

When undertaking a serious project that may be beyond your scope, it’s always a good idea to do your homework in regards to a potential landscape lighting service.  With the number of companies out there all competing for clients, it can be difficult to sift through to find the right landscape lighting company for your needs.

Not sure what sets a great landscape lighting contractor apart from an average option?

When interviewing an outdoor lighting service provider, you should ask lots of questions – and receive answers you’re comfortable with – before deciding to hire anyone to do the job.

In addition, you should do background checks on potential companies. Do not proceed until due diligence is completed.

Here are some questions that you should be asking:

Contractor specialization?

The last thing you want is a technician who isn’t specialized in the field of landscape lighting installing your lights. Look for a professional landscape lighting company that has all the tools and experience necessary to give you specific and unique advice, like Nite Time Décor. The pros will be able to help you with voltage, proper wiring, installation in trees, and design advice.

Landscape Lighting Service Accreditations

You don’t want to trust just anyone with your home. Before you invite a landscape lighting service to work on your home, verify that they:

Have a license/registration/insurance: are the companies that you’re looking at registered with Service Ontario? Are they active members of Landscape Ontario? Do they have the proper permits to operate? Do they carry liability insurance?

BBB: Are the companies on your list accredited by the Better Business Bureau? What are their ratings?

If a company cannot answer these questions satisfactorily, do not let them anywhere near your outdoor lighting installation! Hire an unaccredited business and you could be setting yourself up for disaster.

Landscape Lighting Experience

In order to get a good idea of what sort of work a landscape lighting service has done, carefully review their website and check out the gallery of completed projects and ask  questions like the following:

Q. How much lighting experience do you have?

Ideally the company in question should have enough experience to show that they offer quality lighting installations.

Nite Time Décor has been installing landscape lighting since 1998 and the website has a plethora of resources related to landscape lighting to prove that we know what we’re doing.

Nite Time Décor can guarantee both knowledgeable support and a lifetime maintenance warranty on all of our landscape lighting systems. We can also ensure that your design is the best possible one for your specific landscape lighting needs.

After being involved in the installation and design process of more than 25 years’ worth of systems, we can provide knowledgeable advice in this important phase of your home’s décor.

Q. How many lighting installations has the company done?

Anyone can sell lights, but not just any company can install these lights effectively. The number of installations a company has successfully completed will be a good indicator of their level of expertise and ability.

Q. Can the company provide references?

If your prospective company cannot provide solid customer testimonials or site references, you should be concerned.

Q. Ask Your Landscape Lighting Service About Warranties and Service Plans

Every company will provide you with information in order to secure a sale. The real test is finding out about their service following the installation. Will they leave you hanging in the event of a system malfunction or untimely repair?

Q. Will they provide a preview?

Sometimes, the homeowner’s taste and budget are at odds with the designer’s vision. A reputable landscape lighting company will work with you to design a layout that suites you. Check out our gallery to see the kinds of installations Nite Time Décor has to offer.

Q. How about warranties?

Warranties are only as good as the company that backs them up. All of Nite Time Décor’s products are covered by warranty.

Q. What do their service and maintenance plans look like?

Does the company provide service after the sale? Nite Time Décor follows up with your property six months after the installation. We are committed to the lifetime maintenance of your Oakville outdoor lighting.

Landscape Lighting Products

Having a wide range of products to choose from is important in securing a landscape lighting system that suits your specific needs. Do they offer LEDs? Do you have options of tiki lights, wash lights, well lights? Look into this to ensure your design isn’t limited.

You can look at Nite Time Décor’s products online. We offer LED lighting to help you save money on energy bills, and to keep your thumb green.

In Summary

Best Tips for Preventing Damage to Your Outdoor Lighting System

How to Prevent Damage to your Outdoor Lighting

For homeowners who purchased and installed their landscape lighting system years ago, they may find that their system isn’t running like it used to. This is common if you’ve installed a landscape lighting system and have simply left it on its own for a great length of time.

Our team of experienced lighting professionals have decided to compile this list of the best prevention tips to help keep your system in prime, working condition all year round and to prevent damage.

Benefits of Landscape Lighting

A professionally installed landscape lighting system has many benefits. Not only does it highlight key aesthetic features of your home and boost curb appeal, but it also helps to increase safety and security around your home and property. Outdoor lighting systems give the impression that someone is home, even if that is not the case.

These are just some of the many benefits that a landscape lighting design can bring to your home. But, like many things in life, your landscape lighting system will only be effective if it is in working condition.

Luckily for our Nite Time Decor customers, outdoor lighting maintenance to prevent future damage is usually not a laborious task.

Outdoor Lighting Prevention Tips

Follow these tips to prevent damage to your outdoor lighting systems – either accidentally or purposefully by potential intruders.

Keep Landscape Lighting Away from Lawnmowers

Tips For Preventing Damage To Your Outdoor Lighting System - Keep Landscape Lighting Away From LawnmowersWhen cutting the grass, avoid mowing too close to landscape lighting. You could potentially hit the lighting with the lawn mower or have debris shooting out the side of the mower. Both situations can cause damage to your light fixtures. A simple solution is to place a bucket over your light fixtures before mowing the lawn or using a weed whacker to trim around your lights.

Protect Outdoor Lighting from Rain, Snow and Fertilizer

Landscape lighting components can potentially get damaged from heavy rain, snow, or fertilizer. You can protect the glass portion of the lighting with a protective glass treatment to help prevent the glass from getting scratched or foggy.

A solution that does not involve treatment is to position lights under the cover of awnings and overhangs to protect against weather hazards. You should also check your lights weekly for signs of wear or damage and replace any broken or burned-out bulbs. In addition, you should clean off the lights monthly with a damp rag to ensure there is no dirt build-up. After a rain or ice storm, dry the lights off and clear away any ice that has frozen on to the fixture.

Placing Outdoor Lighting Away from Traffic

Tips for Preventing Damage to Your Outdoor Lighting - Place Outdoor Lighting Away From TrafficTo prevent damage before it occurs, try having your lights placed in areas that don’t receive a lot of foot traffic. You can place your outdoor lights in a way that will highlight your garden and illuminate any unwanted company that happens to wander into your yard. Our down light is an excellent example of a light that can multi-task!

To further discourage unwanted traffic around your home, set your exterior lights on timers. It is preferable to have them come on once it gets dark. However, if the lights operate on a light-sensor, this step is not necessary. Having your exterior lights on a daily routine is useful in creating the impression that there is always someone at home.

Perform Regular Maintenance Checks

Regular maintenance checks will do wonders for increasing the longevity of your landscape lighting system. Simply walk around your property on a weekly or monthly basis and keep an eye out for any damage to your bulbs, fixtures, or wires. If you take this opportunity to clean and straighten your fixtures, and clear away any build up of dirt, snow or ice, your system is sure to be more effective all year long.

20 Best Tips for Cleaning Outdoor Lighting Fixtures

Need some cleaning tips to clean your outdoor lighting fixtures?

It’s not uncommon for our customers to forget to perform basic landscape lighting maintenance.

Landscape Lighting Cleaning Tips

Outdoor light fixtures are often taken for granted in terms of decorative additions to homes, as well as the safe, welcoming light they cast.   When the warmer weather arrives and if you are busy cleaning windows and sprucing up the inside of your home, don’t forget to clean your outdoor lighting. This is not a glamorous task, but it won’t take long, and you’ll reap the rewards all season long.

Cleaning outdoor light fixtures will enhance their beauty and improve the quality of light cast. It’s quite easy to do and doesn’t require special equipment. All you will need is some spare time and plenty of attention to avoid getting water into electrical sockets. Read on for the best 20 tips on how to clean your landscape lighting.

Check Manufacturer’s Instructions

Always check the manufacturer’s instructions on cleaning before you begin. Read through the manufacturer’s booklet for washing instructions. If the booklet is long gone, try checking online.  If your lights were installed by Nite Time Décor, give us a call, we are always available to help or answer any questions.

Best 20 Tips to Clean Your Landscape Lighting

These steps will work for all outdoor light fixtures.

Make sure the light is turned off and disconnect all power sources before removing fixtures or components.

If you cannot reach the light from a ground, secure a ladder near any out-of-reach fixtures. Ensure the ladder is sturdy and the footing is secure before beginning.

While each fixture is unique, most have components that easily removed and cleaned.  Remove any globe, shields or grills with the appropriate tool – usually a screwdriver.

Remove the light bulb. Set all parts aside. You are now ready to begin the cleaning part of your landscape lighting maintenance.

Fill two buckets with hot water and add some dish soap. Make sure it has some suds.

Outdoor lighting cleaning tips

Note: Chemical cleaners, unless recommended by the manufacturer, can leave a filmy residue on glass that leaves the fixture looking dull. Some cleaners may contain mild abrasives that will mark the glass or finish. Some recommend vinegar and water. Use your best judgement.

Place the removed items (except light bulbs) in one bucket.

Dip a rag or sponge in the second sudsy bucket and use that to wipe down the parts of the light fixture that you could not remove. Wipe off the bug carcasses and spider webs.  Make sure to keep water from running into open sockets.

Rinse the fixed pieces and the loosened pieces with water.

When all are dry, apply polish or wax to metal parts if desired; clean glass or shades with glass cleaner.

Wipe off light bulbs with a damp rag (if burnt out, replace them). Again, make sure you do not get the end that screws into the socket wet.

If they are Nite Time Décor lighting, contact us if they are burnt out! The LED lights we use should last for about 10 years!

Reassemble your lighting fixtures and voila – you have completed your landscape lighting maintenance!

Tips for Cleaning Copper and Tiki Torch Lights

As mentioned, please make sure to check the manufacturer’s website for cleaning tips for the specific product that you are cleaning.

There are a variety of metal cleaners on the market. For light fixtures that are made from copper sources recommend you cut a lemon in half and dip the half into salt and scrub the copper lighting fixtures. The acid in the lemon helps loosen any tarnish while the grit in the salt helps scrub the tarnish away. Then remove the lemon juice and salt from the copper light with a damp rag and sprinkle on some copper polish. Wait a few moments and then clean off the polish.

If your outdoor lighting is a tiki torch (Nite Time Decor tiki lamps, for example), before you clean the torch, make sure there are no combustible items nearby. Natural or propane gas tiki lamps burn cleanly, but there will be some carbon build-up. Clean the head with mild soap and warm water.

Other Maintenance Tips

Since you’re out cleaning the outdoor lights, why not do a visual check to identify and fix any potential problems. Here are some general things to watch out for. Remember to always call a professional if any of this is beyond your know-how.

Patio landscaping lighting

Check all the lights. Do they work? Some bulbs may simply need to be tightened and others may need to be replaced. This is a great time to do that while you’re thinking of it.

Check around the lighting, especially ground or garden lighting. Have any bushes or greenery grown enough to block or cast shadows? Trim or prune back what you need to. Did all the surrounding flora survive the winter? Have any branches or limbs come down that need to be tidied up? Have high winds or winter snowfall shifted the lighting? Take the time to readjust it if you can, or call a professional.

Wiring and cords are sometimes susceptible to damage from the weather, rodents, pets and other things. Do a visual check and ensure everything is in top shape. Repair any damage if necessary.

Have a look around the yard. Is it time to upgrade or change out some fixtures? Builders often install fixtures that are too small to save costs, now might be the time to swap those out. Tired of cleaning dead bugs out of light fixtures? Maybe it’s time to put up outdoor lighting bugs aren’t attracted to or can’t get in to.

Top 5 Tips How to Keep Bugs Away from Outdoor Lighting

How to Keep Bugs Away from Outdoor Lighting

Outdoor lighting can be a beautiful and valuable addition to your home. Not only will it accentuate the unique features of your house and garden, but it can extend your living space to the outdoors. With winters seeming to get longer and the summer months getting shorter, it’s important to take advantage of the beautiful weather by stretching the hours you can spend outside. Unfortunately, in the summer outdoor lights draw insects, and who wants to keep shooing moths away instead of enjoying a cool drink and a warm breeze?

Good news! There are ways you can minimize the effect your landscape lighting has on these pesky bugs.

Bugs swarming around your outdoor residential lighting can be quite annoying when you’re trying to enjoy a quiet night on your porch or deck. There is no concrete reason as to why bugs fly right into lights, but the common theory is that bugs tend to be attracted to the brightest light in the sky, like the moon, but now modern outdoor lights confuse them. This poses an irritating and persistent problem. Rather than turn the lights off or poison yourself with bug killer, depend on Nite Time Decor to make lights less appealing to buggy visitors.

Outdoor Lighting: Top 5 Tips on How to Keep Bugs Away

Luckily, there are ways to keep insects away from your landscape lighting. Read on to learn about what kinds of bugs will be attracted to your  landscape lighting and how to choose lighting options that will minimize insect infestation.

What Kinds of Insects?

This is a brief list of the types of insects that will be attracted to your lights. Keep in mind that there are far too many to be listed here.

1.Moths
2.Some beetles
3.Mosquitoes
4.European hornets
5.Wood cockroaches
6.Mayflies
7.Crickets
8.Midges
9.Lacewings

Unfortunately, with bugs come other pests as well. This infestation of bugs may seem like an annoyance to you, but to spiders, bats, toads, and other creatures a proliferation of insects equals a feast! To avoid a full on infestation, increase the cleaning frequency of the lanterns in your landscape lighting maintenance routine. This will help prevent these creatures from coming around more often.

Why Are Bugs Attracted to Lights?

Though different insects are attracted to lights for different reasons, here are some of the most common (though not necessarily scientifically accurate) theories:

a. Unnatural light interferes with an insect’s ability to navigate

This theory suggests that nocturnal insects, such as moths, use light sources like the stars and moon to navigate by aligning themselves at a certain angle relative to the source. Because unnatural light sources like lightbulbs are stationary and closer than the moon, the angle changes, so it’s difficult for the moth to keep itself on course.

b. Bugs think lights are food

Insects seem to be attracted to ultraviolet lights and certain flowers (food source) emit UV light.

c. Insects think a light means the path is clear

Some insects think that the light means their flight path is unobstructed. This could explain why certain bugs seem to purposefully fly right into a sizzling hot light bulb.

Why Do Insects Love Landscape Lighting?

While it is different for every species, there are a few theories. For some bugs, the bright light acts as an emergency signal. They fly towards it, rather than into the darkness, as an act of safety.

Other bugs use natural lights as a navigational source, which forces them to be confused by artificial lighting. As long as the light is far away, such as the moon or the sun, the light can be used to guide them. As soon as the insect gets close to the light, they become confused. This is why you see moths fluttering around your Burlington landscape lighting aimlessly.

Some insects may become night-blind. Their eyes have multiple lenses that don’t always adjust to the dark properly, which causes a dangerous situation if predators are near.

Here are our top 5 Tips to keep bugs away:

Change the Location of Your Landscape Lights

This one is fairly basic, but you can do things such as switching to spotlights and putting them away from where the bugs will annoy you. Consult with our residential outdoor lighting service to ensure that no matter where lights get moved, the illumination will still shine in an appropriate area.

Have Our Outdoor Lighting Experts Install Motion Lights

Installing motion lights may do the trick. Have Nite Time Decor install motion lights but put the sensor away from the lights. Just be sure that the area you want to light up gets lit! This way you, and not the bugs, will trigger your Oakville residential lighting to turn on.

Change the Light Bulbs in your Landscape Lights

Bugs tend to see very well in ultra-violet light – far better than we can. Thus they are naturally drawn to these types of lights. To keep the bugs away, try and avoid installing lights in the cooler light spectrum. Trying switching to a warmer, yellower light. Insects don’t see nearly as well in the yellow to infra-red spectrum. Since they can’t see yellow lights as much, they won’t be as drawn to them. It’s important to note that this won’t actively repel the bugs, but it will certainly reduce the traffic flow around your lights, especially if you have a persistent problem with May beetles, June bugs and moths.

Warm Colours Deters Insects

Warm light colours such as red, orange and yellow have the highest wavelengths. So naturally, you’ll want to use warm coloured bulbs in your outdoor lighting design in order to deter large swarms of bugs and insects. Yellow compact florescent bulbs, sodium vapour bulbs and halogen bulbs are lighting options that tend to decrease bug and insect activity.

LED Lights Keeps Bugs Away

LED lights are another great outdoor lighting option for keeping bugs away, as they emit little to no ultraviolet (UV) light. Insects and bugs are able to detect UV light, so having bulbs that emit no light and no heat will help keep bugs away. When it comes to LED lights, the lower the Kelvin (K) temperature, the more yellow the light will appear.

Be careful when it comes to incorporating large or low quality LED lights into your lighting design, as once the temperature reaches about 6,000 Kelvins, the LED will start to emit a blue tint that bugs and insects will pick up on.

Make Smart Purchases

Knowing which bulbs to use in your outdoor lighting fixtures will go a long way in keeping bugs and insects away from your illuminated outdoor space, but sometimes a good price may be hard to pass up. Just remember when shopping for new bulbs for your landscape lighting design that the cheapest option may not always be the best one. That’s not to say you can’t find reasonably priced warm-coloured bulbs and LED lights, but it’s important to think about how the lights you purchase will contribute to, or take away from, the overall look of your outdoor space.

Outdoor Lighting: Top 5 Tips on How to Keep Bugs Away

Adjust your Landscape Lighting Timing

Timing is everything! When planning your landscape lighting maintenance, it is a good idea to make sure that you set your lights to turn on about one hour after sundown. There are some bugs that fly at dusk only, and you want to prevent them sticking around your lights when night falls.

Other Useful Lighting Accessories

While any of these alone will not do the trick, they can certainly help:

Citronella candles: mosquitoes dislike the smell of citronella.

Paint your porch ceiling a light blue: the colour may help keep wasps, mosquitoes and other flying insects away.

Ceiling fans: these can be a deterrent to flying bugs. Install them above your porch or balcony.

Bug zappers: these come in both electric and solar models. They can be a bit noisy and if you get an electric model, you’ll need to pay to keep it running. Put them in an area where you don’t sit frequently to reduce the noise and potentially the traffic flow.

When it comes to bugs and insects, there is no way to keep them away 100 per cent of the time. If one insect picks up on a light, others tend to follow in the same direction. But taking steps to minimize bug presence will certainly get you closer to having a less bugs in your outdoor space. For more tips on keeping bugs away read “How to Keep Mosquitoes Away at Night“. Driveway and Pathway Lighting Tips + Ideas

Importance of Driveway and Pathway Lighting

Installing custom outdoor lighting systems on your driveway or pathway is a great way to make your home or business more welcoming.  Driveway entry landscape lighting ideas

Not only will this lead visitors to your door and improve the curb appeal of your property, but the lighting provided can prevent robberies, intruders and trespassers.  The best aspect aside from the functionality is that the lighting also serves to enhance the beauty of any outdoor landscaping you may have.

Driveway lighting is one of the first things people see so it is important to get the outdoor lighting designed and installed correctly. If you want to install some driveway lighting at your home or business, here are some general guidelines as well as some great ideas.

Custom Outdoor Lighting for Paths

Pathway lights are great for general safety and way finding.  This also helps avoid having to use ugly flood lights when directing customers to your establishment.  When designing your path lights, avoid putting them too close together, which creates a runway effect.  Install a path of lights on poles, starting with two on either side of an entrance.

At Nite Time Décor, we recommend lining the lights along the driveway at regular well spaced intervals to improve visibility. Our area lights work beautifully for this technique. Also, when it comes to brightness, less is more.  Be subtle and avoid blinding your patrons.

Note sure where to start? Use our custom designed lighting service to come up with some unique ideas that will help set your home or business apart.

Outdoor Lighting Ideas for Driveways

Driveway lighting ideas and tips Placing lights in the driveway of your home or business provides a safe, welcoming entrance.

One great idea is to put a lamppost or an entry pier at the entrance, which also doubles as an address marker, making it easier for clients to locate your business.  Place driveway lights wherever there are changes of direction and close obstacles such as trees, walls, fences, boulders, or a hillside.

The last thing your business needs is a nasty accident that leaves you liable.  Place the lights every 10 to 15 feet on alternating sides.  This provides some illumination without being intrusively bright.

Post lighting: Post lighting differs from path lighting in that it often contains only one or two lights along a drive. This works especially well for shorter driveways. Simply find important focal points and install!

Transit lighting: Unlike the higher lights in the previous two methods, this technique is all about low placement lighting. This has a more subtle effect than the previous two and subtracts any glare that high lighting can cause. For a subtle lighting path along your drive, try our in ground well lights.

Ambient lighting: This works for driveways that have shrubbery or trees around the borders. Up light these to add to the overall aesthetic of your property. Our spot lights will not only add to this ambience, but they will also contribute a fair amount of light to the driveway.

Of course, you can always mix and match techniques to suit your own personal style. Try exploring all the options for lighting to create an interesting and unique driveway lighting system. The more creative you get, the better the finished product will look!

Lighting Options to Create the Outdoor Mood You Want

The first decision you will make when installing your custom outdoor lighting systems is whether you’ll go with solar or conventional lighting.

Solar lights have a solar panel mounted on top and do not require electrical wiring, which means minimal installation.  However, the length of the charge may vary.

A great option is our LED lighting, which uses 90 per cent less electricity and do not have issues with overheating.  You do pay a bit more initially for LED lights, but the savings in energy consumption and light bulb replacement over the lifespan more than makes up for the initial investment. Read our “Top 13 Benefits of LED Outdoor Lighting” to learn more.

Another factor to consider is the light style. Pathway and driveway landscape lighting ideas and tips

Would you like your commercial lighting designs to be prominent or subtle?  Options like lanterns, lamps, or posts protrude a bit more, but are also a great way to add decorative elements to the landscape of your business.  Recessed lighting may take a backseat to your garden, but it’s also a great way to illuminate any flowers or shrubbery without the light itself competing for attention.  This is a very personal preference, and it all depends on your business and your style.

Top 10 Reasons to Install Landscape Lighting

Top 10 Reasons to Install Landscape Lighting

If you’re on the fence about investing in landscape lighting, it’s time to commit to a brighter future! There are so many reasons to add landscape lighting to your outdoor décor that it’s actually silly not to do it.

When it comes to landscape lighting, a lot of people tend to think of the aesthetic value it brings to a home, and rightfully so – as the right design can illuminate the best features of your home while adding curb appeal.

But landscape lighting does more than just give your home a beautiful glow long after the sun’s gone down, it also provides a range of other benefits including security, safety, comfort and utility.

Here are the top 10 reasons to install landscape lighting at your home or commercial property:

10. Outdoor Landscape Lighting Creates a Focal Point

Outdoor landscape lighting can help add drama to your property by creating focal points. Landscape lighting companies often focus on large trees, water features, and statues in order to create eye-catching focal points on a property.

9. Outdoor Landscape Lighting Can Extend Your Living Area

Why spend your time inside when you can enjoy more time in the garden or relaxing on your patio? A creative landscape lighting design can help you enjoy your outdoor space at all hours of the day… and night!

A beautiful backyard porch or patio is great during the daytime, but if you aren’t able to use it after the sun has set, you are missing out on a valuable living space in your home. This is especially true for smaller homes as an outdoor oasis can open your home up and create additional lounging and entertaining space.  What’s more, a landscape lighting design also offers the comfort and relaxation of spending a warm summer evening out under the stars with family and friends.

8. Outdoor Landscape Lighting Increases the Curb Appeal of Your Property

Outdoor landscaping lighting can increase the curb appeal of any  residential,  commercial, or industrial property. Even if your home is modest, landscape lighting can give it a little additional charm and whimsy.

A beautiful outdoor landscape lighting design shows that you take pride in your property and appreciate the natural beauty of your surroundings. And give your neighbours something to appreciate (and envy!). Not only that, it will make your home stand on a crowded block as well.

7. Outdoor Lighting Systems Increase the Safety and Security of Your Property

Illuminating the unique features of your home is one thing, but when it comes to the security of your home and the safety of your loved ones inside of it, nothing else matters. Fortunately landscape lighting helps to secure your home and deter from incidents like criminal and animal activity.

One of the worst feelings is pulling into the driveway late at night and realizing you’ve forgotten to turn your porch light on. With no lighting outside to guide you, you slowly make your way to the door from your driveway, hoping to avoid sidestepping into your garden. Once there, you struggle to find the key you’re looking for. With a landscape lighting design, you no longer need to make that late-night navigation to your doorstep.

In addition, a well lit home or business deters criminals. Protect your property with the power of outdoor lighting. Homes that are poorly lit are more than 30% more likely to be targeted by vandals or criminals. Sophisticated spotlights and programmable time settings and motion sensor lights add character at the same time enhancing the safety and security of your space.
